Flags have long been important symbols representing nations, and in today’s digital era, they have transcended into the online realm through the inclusion of flag emojis in the Unicode character set. However, there is limited information available regarding the role of flag emojis in online communication, particularly in the context of political discourse. This article delves into the significance of flag emojis in political communication online, drawing on an analysis of 640,676 tweets from major political parties and Members of Parliament in both Germany and the United States.

Related Work

Prior to this study, there has been relatively little research conducted on the role of flag emojis in online political communication. However, studies have explored the use of emojis more broadly, highlighting their potential to convey emotional cues, support identity expression, and enhance user engagement. Understanding the specific role that flag emojis play in political communication is essential to gain deeper insights into how national symbols are integrated into this context.

Study

In this study, researchers analyzed an extensive dataset of 640,676 tweets to investigate the role of flag emojis in online political communication. The tweets were sourced from important political parties and Members of Parliament in Germany and the United States. By examining the frequency of flag emoji usage and its alignment with political ideology, as well as its association with external national events, the researchers aimed to shed light on the influence of flag emojis in political discourse.

Results

The findings of this study reveal that flag emojis are frequently employed in political communication online and are primarily used in accordance with political ideology. Similar to offline usage, the presence of flag emojis in online communication is predominantly associated with national events of significance. Notably, this association is stronger in the United States compared to Germany.

Moreover, the study highlights that the presence of the national flag emoji is linked to considerably higher engagement in Germany, regardless of political party. In the United States, the impact of flag emojis on engagement varies slightly, resulting in slightly higher engagement for politicians affiliated with the Republican party and slightly lower engagement for Democrats.

Discussion and Limitations

The results of this study provide valuable insights into the role of flag emojis in online political communication. By demonstrating the alignment of flag emoji use with political ideology and its impact on engagement, the findings highlight the significance of national symbols in shaping political discourse in the digital age.
